Angermayer Brumm & Lange Group
The Angermayer, Brumm & Lange Group (ABL) is an independent merchant banking group working in asset management, financial sales and investment banking.

Founded in 1999, it is now one of the leading financial service providers in Germany, with about 6.5 billion euros in assets under management, approximately 400 employees in 15 countries around the world and more than 18,000 affiliated independent financial advisors. The company provides advice to companies through Silvia Quandt & Cie. AG, to private customers through Aragon AG, and to wealthy investors with the ABL Wealth Management division. They also undertake investment activity through the two asset management companies: Altira AG and CH2 AG. Therefore, they have significant holdings in funds managed by their subsidiaries.

The core areas of expertise include financial services, German SMEs, emerging markets, renewable energy and commodities.

ABL is wholly-owned by five partners: Christian Angermayer, Peter Brumm, Andreas Lange, Ralph Konrad and Dr. Sebastian Grabmaier, along with the Silvia Quandt family. IAM
“IAM’s focus has always been about providing an investment solution for our clients”, says Chairman Albert Fuss.  Since 1989, IAM has entered into a dialogue with each and every client as to their desired objectives from their investments in hedge funds.  85% of the nearly $3bn AUM is in customised mandates. Based on this partnership approach, clients are provided with three tailor-made elements: a dedicated portfolio, the optimal structure through which to invest, and an in-depth client relations programme. “Importantly, we give all clients the full details of their investments to allow them genuine involvement and for them to gain insights into our investment thinking”, says CEO Morten Spenner.

IAM builds concentrated portfolios (typically 15-25 hedge funds) with high conviction allocations to “mid-sized” hedge funds (typically $300m-$3bn in size) sourced from around the globe.  All the IAM approved underlying hedge funds are in liquid strategies and offer liquid terms which IAM benefitted from in 2008. “Whilst we do carefully consider the top-down views, there is no substitute for high quality manager selection”, adds Albert Fuss.

Decisions are ultimately qualitative in nature and are arrived at based on a disciplined and heavily documented investment process emphasizing a team-approach with a limited number of managers covered per analyst. The process is of institutional quality and includes elements such as independent risk management and separation of investment research from operational due diligence.  This last feature has contributed to IAM avoiding investment in any of the infamous “blow-ups”.

The firm benefits from a predominantly institutional client-base and a strong commitment to professional standards such as GIPS compliance.  IAM is majority-owned by 24 employees and supported by minority owners Jefferies and Sir Ronald Cohen. “Since 1989, we have delivered strong risk-adjusted returns including outperformance of the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index over 10, 5, and 3 years.  We continue to commit to this standard of excellence.”, concludes Morten Spenner.
