Background:

Mr. Bonderman co-founded TPG Capital (formerly Texas Pacific Growth) in 1992 with partners James Coulter and William S. Price III. The firm focuses on leveraged buyouts, distressed debt investments and venture capital with a focus in biotechnology. Since its inception, the firm has raised over $80 billion across 20 distinct funds.

In 1994, TPG established an Asian arm, Newbridge Capital, becoming one of the first private equity firms to begin investing in China. TPG’s global outlook has grown since, with continuous additional investment in Latin American regions. Last year, TPG closed it’s 7th Asia-focused private equity fund with $4.6 billion in commitments. Shortly thereafter, the firm established a joint investment platform with $50 billion Chinese investment giant CICC to expand cross-border opportunities and foreign investment in China.

The firm also has a focus in the healthcare sector, with over $11.5 billion invested over that past decade. In 2019, TPG raised over $2.6 billion for its healthcare buyout fund, TPG Healthcare Partners.

Mr. Bonderman studied at the University of Washington and Harvard Law School. During a fellowship at Harvard, Mr. Bonderman became adept in Islamic legal tradition after travelling to Egypt several times to study Islamic Legal Jurisprudence and Law. The experience gave Mr. Bonderman fluency in Arabic.

Prior to TPG Capital, Mr. Bonderman was a lawyer at Arnold & Porter and worked under American billionaire Robert Bass as Chief Operating Officer of RMBG. He is an avid supporter of conservation and currently on the board of The Wilderness Society, the Grand Canyon Trust and the World Wide Fund for Nature.
